Like previous years, as 2016 approached I started thinking about what I wanted from 2016. What I had achieved in 2015 and also about the things I hadn’t quite managed to achieve but wanted to.
There are a few things I wanted to do in 2015 which I didn’t manage to do, the two things that stand out most for me are, learning to drive and changing my lifestyle/losing weight.
Learning to drive has been on my list for the last 3/4 years and I keep putting it off. I’m pretty nervous about learning to drive but I want to learn as it will make life a lot easier getting from A to B. My sister learnt to drive last year and passed her test in January, she did amazingly and said she loves it so it has given me the extra push I needed. Although I haven’t booked a lesson yet, I do plan on booking my first block of lessons soon
The other thing I didn’t quite get round to completing was giving my lifestyle an overhaul. Lifestyle change is a nicer way of saying I needed to lose weight! At the beginning of last year I was losing weight and doing well but in the second half of the year I put on weight and wasn’t exercising at all, plus the 2/3 litres of cherry coke I was drinking every day wasn’t helping! I ended the year weighing in at 12.5 stone which is more than a stone heavier than I started the year, and only 3lbs away from the heaviest I have ever been.
Needless to say I was pretty disappointed with myself. That’s why at the end of December I decided to make a change, not one that would last a month or two but a permanent change. I started following The Bikini Body Guide by Kayla Itsines. It’s a 12 week program that follows high intensity and low intensity training. The workouts are just over 30 minutes long which means there’s really no excuse for not fitting it in each day, although I do get a day off a week too.
Harder than the exercise is the eating, oh the eating. Last year I got into the terrible habit of drinking far too much cherry coke, I was drinking between 2 to 3 litres a day and drinking nothing else alongside that. My body was lacking in water, I was consuming far too much sugar and this was also having a negative affect on my anxiety which is when I really decided enough was enough. I haven’t touched a drop since the end of December and I feel so much better for it. I’m sleeping better as the caffeine isn’t keeping me awake, I have more energy as I’m eating and drinking better, my skin is 100 times better and I don’t snack as much now either. I’m such a fussy eater which doesn’t help with the healthy eating, I like meat but only if it doesn’t taste like meat so that means having a sauce or spice etc. I’m not keen on a lot of vegetables and I’d still rather have chocolate than an apple, but I’m slowly trying new things and changing my habits for the better. I did make a delicious couscous chicken salad, along with the dressing and it tasted delicious so I’m getting there, slowly. It’s not going to be an overnight thing and I’m okay with that, I’m in it for the long-haul.
(Bikini Body Guide week 0 to week 4)
Already, the results of the changes are paying off. I have lost over half a stone since the start of the year and now weigh in at 11.8 stone which I’m really pleased with in such a short space of time. Along with the weight loss I have lost inches and I’m also toning. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard and I still have the odd day where I eat a Mars bar, a packet of crisps and a Ripple, but what’s changed is I move on and treat the next day as a new one, I don’t let one setback throw me off track.
I was going to blog about this back in January but decided to wait and see if I stuck it out this time, so often in the past things have started so well but after two weeks things go back to how they were before. This time it feels different. I will be sharing updates of how I’m getting on, probably every four weeks as that’s when I take updated pictures etc. Although I’m not sure I’m brave enough to share the pictures yet. Maybe in a few months. I will also be sharing some delicious, but healthy recipes. My first one is a recipe for guilt free brownie bites, delicious and full of goodness!
This time, there are NO excuses!
If you’re on a weight loss journey, remember, loosing weight is a marathon, not a sprint!
