There’s nothing worse than a major appliance breaking. Replacing one of your major household appliances can be costly. Whether your fridge freezer is on the blink, your cooker is playing up or your washing machine has sprung a leak, they aren’t cheap to replace. What’s worse, they always seem to break at the same time.
Assess the damage
A major appliance breaking can be stressful. Before doing anything else, take a deep breath, get a cup of tea and take 5 minutes out. When you’re ready to assess the damage things might not be as bad as they first seemed.
If you live in your own home or are in an unfurnished property where you brought in your own goods, chances are you will be responsible for repairing and replacing broken appliances. If you’re unsure and live in a rented property check your lease agreement or phone your estate agents or landlord to clarify your position.
Check your warranty
If your appliance breaks, one of the first things you should do is check to see if it’s still under warranty. If the warranty is still valid the company you bought if from should fix the appliance or replace it if it can’t be repaired.
Can it be repaired?
If your appliance isn’t within the warranty period you could see if it’s possible to replace the part that’s broken, instead of buying a new appliance. If you can replace a small part it will save you a small fortune. For example, did you know you can get replacement shelves for your fridge if you accidentally break one? You can even get replacement shelves cut to size at Simply Plastics. If you want to attempt a repair yourself there are hundreds of how-to videos on YouTube, but remember, safety first! Gas appliances must be repaired by a Gas Safe registered professional.
Time to replace your appliance
If your appliance can’t be repaired you could try looking on your local Gumtree and Facebook selling pages to see if someone is selling the appliance you need. There’s also Freecycle where people offer their old appliances for free. If you’re in the position to buy a new appliance remember to take a look online to see if you can find a discount code or voucher to save some money on the purchase. You can also earn cashback by signing up to Quidco and making your purchase through them. It’s easy to join and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your balance grows.
