5 Family-Friendly Destinations in France Close to Ferry Ports

If you read my Holiday Planning 2017 blog post you will know I’m visiting France at the end of May. I’m really looking forward to visiting France again and can’t wait to do as much exploring as I can. Although we’re primarily going to Disneyland, we are planning to do some sight-seeing too.

If you’re thinking about holidaying in France, but you’re not sure where to stay then this post will help provide some great holiday destination ideas. All of the locations below are also located within easy reach of a ferry port which makes them a great choice for family holidays and for those who wish to drive and travel by ferry. Driving to France is relatively cheap in comparison to flying or taking the Eurostar, the destinations mentioned below are easy to get to and driving is also a great way to take in some of the sights. Nantes is a beautiful city in the Upper Brittany region of France. It’s a lively and vibrant city famed for its symphony orchestra, fine opera company and many historic buildings. Long rated as one of Frances best places to live. Top sights to see when holidaying in Nantes include Machines of the Isle of Nantes, Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes Cathedral and Tour Bretagne. Getting to Nantes from the UK is plain sailing (excuse the pun), it’s a short ferry trip from Portsmouth to St Malo with Brittany Ferries, then an easy 2 hour drive to Nantes through the beautiful French countryside.


For a family holiday that caters for adults and children alike, Normandy is a brilliant choice. It couldn’t be easier to reach with three ports located in the region, Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg. The region is home to beautiful stretches of beaches, including Omaha Beach which is the site of the famous D-Day landing. With so much historical significance, Normandy is a guaranteed to be a hit with history fans. When taking a trip to Normandy some of the must visit locations include Mont Saint-Michel, the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Monet’s Gardens to name but a few.


A lovely family friendly destination, Bordeaux is a port city located on the Garonne River in the south-west of France. Well known and loved for its gothic cathedral Saint-André, art museums and classed by many as the greatest fine wine region in the world. There’s a lot to see and do in the area and nearby, take a trip to Place de la Bourse or Bordeaux Cathedral and enjoy the beautiful architecture on offer, take a stroll or even a boat trip down the Garonne river or why not enjoy a show at the Opéra National de Bordeaux. Located only a 3 and a half hours drive from Bilbao, Bordeaux is within easy reach of UK for holidaymakers wanting to enjoy the sights and sounds of this gorgeous city.


Located in the north-west of France, the region of Brittany is a great family holiday destination. With 3 main ferry ports, Saint-Malo, Brest and Lorient, Brittany is easy to access for those who want to drive and take the ferry across the channel from the UK. Brittany is famous for its many beautiful beaches, and for its cider and seafood cuisine. There’s so much to see and do in the Brittany region, take in the beautiful architecture of Quimper Cathedral, enjoy a stroll along the Pointe de Pen-Hir coastline and children will love a visit to the Great Aquarium Saint-Malo.


An obvious choice, but one not to be missed. Paris is located only a 3 hour drive from Calais, which makes it a top holiday choice for us Brits. Paris is a great family holiday destination, with so much to offer. Enjoy the culinary delights of some amazing restaurants, arguably some of the best in France. Visit the iconic Eiffel Tower – a must for any visit, explore the Notre Dame de Paris, visit The Louvre and don’t forget Disneyland Paris is located a short 30 minute drive away. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away, a family holiday, a sightseeing trip, a historical or art centred holiday, Paris has so much to offer.
