I have spoken about my home renovation plans for 2018 earlier in the year and although we’re already in October, I have to be honest and say I haven’t got as much done as I would have liked. I recently painted my stairs and hallway which is a huge challenge because it has really high ceilings. I chose a lovely grey colour called Polished Pebble and spent the weekend painting only for it to look purple instead of grey, not what I wanted at all.
As a result of the colour being wrong, I decided to re-paint the hall and stairs white. I repainted the area a couple of weeks ago now and although it’s looking better it needs a second coat, not something I’m particularly looking forward to but it’s on my to-do list for this weekend.
I have also picked out some accessories in the form of a mirror and pictures to hang on the wall. I will also be adding a small console/storage unit at the bottom of the stairs for shoes although I have yet to make a decision on which one. Since I’m currently updating my hallway and stairs I thought I would share some ideas on ways you can update the look of your hall and stairs, there are a lot of easy and inexpensive ways you can do this and I hope it gives you some inspiration for your home.
Update your staircase
A staircase is often one of the first things we see when we enter a home, this is true for my home with the staircase directly at the front door. It’s easy to think that our staircases are what they are and that there’s nothing we can do to change their look apart from perhaps re-carpet and paint them but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
One of the biggest ways you can update your hall and stairs is to replace an old outdated staircase with a modern new one. Staircases come in a huge variety of styles now, glass, spiral, wood, steel, contemporary, classic or you could even opt for a bespoke staircase.
If a new flight of stairs isn’t in your budget you could consider a staircase renovation by specialists Abbot-Wade who can bring an old staircase back to life.
A lick of paint
This is one of the quickest, easiest and cheapest ways to give your hallway and staircase a makeover. A fresh coat of paint can transform a dark small hallway into an open and airy space simply by choosing a light bright colour, or you could choose a pop of colour on the walls.
If you have a handrail the full length or your hall and stairs you could even opt for a colour on the bottom and a different colour on the top. Grey and white is a popular choice when this is an option and always looks fresh, modern and elegant.
Bringing the outdoors in is a popular trend and has been for a few years now, why not jump on the bandwagon and add a couple of plants to your home. If you have a landing midway up your stairs this is an ideal place for a larger plant or you could place a few smaller plants on your stairs. If you don’t have any floor space free you could install a hanging planter, these are available in a huge range of styles or you could even make your own hanging planter.
With coats and shoes usually being taken off and left in the hallway it can quickly become an area of the home that looks cluttered, however, a few clever storage solutions can help with this and keep things tidy and hidden out of sight.
The most common item of furniture found in a hallway is a shoe cupboard which is perfect for storing everyone’s shoes and keeping them out of the way. Having coat hooks or a coat stand is another great item to have in your hallway, it will keep your coats nearby so you can grab them when you’re heading out of the house but will also keep everything in its place.
Decorating your hall and stairs can seem difficult, it’s not a normal box shape like most rooms so trying to decide where you will place accessories can be challenging.
There are a lot of accessories you can have in your hallway and staircase, especially if you have a unit where you can place ornaments but if you want to keep things simple a mirror and a few photos are a simple way to add style and colour. You could add photos at the top or your stairs, in your hallway or place a few going up your stairs. A great source of ideas and inspiration is Pinterest where you can find hundreds of photos which will give you ideas on how you could accessorise your hall and stairs.
