Our homes are full of mundane, everyday objects that bring us no joy and offer no useful contributions to the decor, but their existence is inevitable. After all, we can’t throw out the coffee machine, laundry basket, or radiators – we need them after all, but do they have to look so drab? Well, no. There are plenty of ways to bring a bit of a sparkle to the mundane additions to the house. All it takes it a bit of imagination, although a few quid would probably help too.
Don’t underestimate the importance of colour
We buy many appliances to blend into the background, but no matter how hard you try, you just can’t find a microwave which looks like a kitchen wall. Why not go the other way, and make a feature of some of the unavoidable objects? They may cost a bit more, but a matching kitchen set in bright and eye-catching colours can add a chicness to a room which doesn’t always have the word chic associated with it. Trying to blend everything into the background leaves a home looking drab and focus-less. Sometimes it’s fun to embrace features that wouldn’t necessarily be a focal point.
Add beauty where you might not expect it
Some of the objects contained within a home aren’t necessarily made with style in mind, and practicality must prevail. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t look utterly beautiful. Items such as radiators can actually be a classy and stunning addition to a room, if you know where to look. Designer radiators are becoming more common, and can add a touch of elegance and style to the room in a way you might not expect. So rather than hiding radiators behind sofas or curtains, they can be embraced as a part of the room’s general style instead.
Bring in some natural elements
If you want to bring a softness or point of interest to a room, consider bringing in some natural elements. Houseplants are a good example as they bring colour, texture, and even filtered air to the room, but they can also help to soften the edge and make it feel homelier. Similarly, if you’re looking into a new table or surface, rougher wooden textures can bring elegance. It seems counter-intuitive, but they help to emphasise other elements in the room by blending into the background.
Boost light with reflective surfaces
A bit of sparkle never hurt anyone, and it can bring a touch of elegance to a room, as well as make the space feel bigger. Reflective surfaces are amazing at boosting the light in a room, so it’ll feel larger, brighter, and more open. And it’s not just mirrors that work – chrome in the kitchen and shiny tiling in the bathroom bring light, space, and a touch of class.
It’s important to keep the styling simple and elegant so that features which sparkle are able to stand out. Too much sparkle and the look will be lost, or could even be overdone. Remember that even mundane objects can bring elegance and sparkle to your home.
