Furniture Choice recently conducted a survey looking into Britain’s dining habits and the results were pretty interesting! 79 percent of UK adults living in a family home think it’s important to sit down to a meal together, however 36 percent of us still sit on the sofa (I’m guilty of that) and 58 percent are more likely to watch TV whilst eating with others (guilty again). Furniture Choice are on a mission to bring the family back together around the dinner table and have asked selected bloggers to get involved.
I have to be honest, growing up we didn’t eat around the table every night. We had a dining table we just didn’t use it very often, we would often eat at different times so I guess that was a factor. On the occasions we did eat around the table, Christmas, Birthdays etc it was great as we all sat down at the same time and it gave us the opportunity to enjoy a meal together.
As an adult the dining room table has become a place to sit and work rather than enjoy a meal, I tend to eat in front of the tv which I admit isn’t the best habit.
To try and change the habit of a lifetime isn’t easy, however I do think it’s better to eat around the table so it’s something I am trying to change. Having a roast dinner on a Sunday is something we always enjoy so I thought that would be the perfect opportunity to eat around the table and enjoy a meal together.
This was the first time I cooked a roast dinner (shocking I know!), all in all it went pretty well apart from the fact I forgot the yorkshire puddings and had to put those in and completely forgot the mash – oops! I cooked the usual, chicken, roast potatoes, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, parsnips, and of course yorkshire puddings. I set the table using the news plates I bought as part of the Furniture Choice meal challenge and we all sat down to enjoy a meal together.
The meal was lovely and it was nice to sit down together and talk about what we had all been up to. I definitely feel there are a lot of benefits to eating together around the table, we all get to spend time together, we find out how everyone’s week has been and it’s nice to have some time away from the TV and technology to just talk.
We even had some desert around the table. Some delicious cheese cake, sadly I can’t say I made this but it was really nice and it was great to finish the meal off with something sweet.
We will definitely be eating more meals together going forward, I’m not going to say we will have every meal together as sometimes that isn’t possible. We are however going to eat around the table every Sunday which is definitely a step in the right direction.
