If you have read my post making my house a home in 2018 you will know that one of my aims for 2018 is to finish, or at least make good progress with decorating my home.
I would like to paint all of my rooms because at the moment the walls are magnolia, which is fine but I want to add some colour. I would also like to add some quote prints/artwork and maybe a photo wall with personal photos. I’m also considering decorating one wall of my kitchen with a lovely white brick wall mural.
As the year has gone on I have had to re-evaluate my plans taking into account the fact we’re already 6 months into the year and my budget, this means that unfortunately I’m not going to get as much done as I would have liked but I will still be making as much progress as I can. I will be adding small touches to the rooms I might not be able to fully revamp but luckily there are a lot of simple ways to update a room on a budget.
If you’re working within a tight budget but want to revamp your room take a look at some of the suggestions below, you might be surprised how easily and cheaply you can change the look and feel of your room.
Add a wall mural
If you want to add a feature wall then one way to do this is to add a wall mural, these are ideal whether you’re looking to cover a small or large area. A wall mural can add colour, style and a focal point to a room, they can also be made to measure which means no cutting and trying to fit the pattern together. I love the white brick wallpaper mural and would love to add this to my kitchen wall.
Change drawer and cabinet handles
This is a really inexpensive way to give your kitchen a new look quickly, easily and on a budget. You can change old, worn handles for modern handles which match your decor, you would be surprised how much this can change the look and feel of your room.
Paint your room
Nothing can change the look of a room quite as well as a lick of paint. Whether you’re looking for a calming colour, or a bright and bold statement colour you can find something to suit your needs and you can pick up a tin of paint relatively cheaply. This makes it a quick and budget-friendly choice when it comes to updating a room.
Create a photo wall
If you want to create a focal wall and add a bit of personality to a room then why not consider adding a photo wall. This is a lovely way to update your room with photos of family and friends to cherish and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You don’t have to use the same style of photo frame, in fact, it looks better when you mix and match frames which means you could pick up odd frames from second-hand shops or repurpose old frames.
Revamp an old item of furniture
If you have an old item of furniture which has seen better days then why not update it with a lick of paint, new handles etc. This can give an old item new life and give your room a new look in the process. If you’re not sure where to start then Pinterest is a great resource for ideas and tips on revamping old furniture.
A sofa is a big purchase so it’s not something that you will be looking to replace if you’re on a budget like me. However, if you want to give your sofa a new look on a budget you could consider sofa covers. These can be picked up relatively cheaply if you shop around, you could even make your own if you’re crafty!
If you like having ornaments dotted around your room but they’re starting to take over and make the room look cluttered why not consider taking a few items and putting them in another room. A good declutter can make a room feel a lot more open. You could even buy a shelf or two to put your ornaments on which would give you somewhere to display them and add a new feature to your room.
This won’t cost you a thing and you might be surprised how simply changing your room around can give it a new look and make it feel fresher.
If you have any tips on updating a room on a budget I would love to hear them.
