Pack in Advance

One of the biggest chores when it comes to moving house is the packing process. If you’ve lived in your current home for years and it’s completely kitted out then there’s a significant amount of stuff to move. As soon as you know you’re going to be moving, it’s worth making a start on the packing process. Start in places like the attic, garage and shed packing up things you’re not going to need until you move. Things like books, out of season clothes and anything put away in storage can all be boxed up ready to take to the new place. Use it as a chance to go through everything carefully and declutter, and box everything properly. That way, when you come to move you’re not rushing throwing everything into boxes and bags at the last minute.

Get Help With Moving

If your budget is bigger, you could hire a company to help you pack as well as load and unload for you. Otherwise, you could hire a van yourself or get a man with a van- sites like Shiply allow you to compare prices. If you decide on either of the latter two options, try and rope in some additional help. Friends and family can make this process so much quicker and easier, have them help you load boxes onto the van and then unload them again at the other side. Heavy items like washing machines and furniture will need two strong people to help lift so rope in anyone in your circle that has muscles! Helping people move is a bit of a hassle but that’s what loved ones are for, you can always treat them to drinks and food later that evening when you’re all done to say thank you. If you have valuables or fragile items like laptops and jewellery, it could be worth packing these separately and taking a load in your car. That way you can be extra careful with them and you know exactly where they are.

Create an Emergency Pack

With everything you own packed into boxes, if you suddenly decide you need something on moving day it’s going to be a huge inconvenience to find. For this reason, having an emergency pack for moving day with items you want on hand can make life much easier. Mobile phone chargers, paperwork, toilet roll, bin bags- anything you’re going to have to use on the day. If you put in some snacks and drinks you have things on hand to keep you going too.
