The 5200 comes from one of the most popular and trusted satnav brands – TomTom.  Over the last month, I have been putting the new satnav through its paces to see if it lives up to the hype and to see how it compares to other devices on the market.

Below you can find my thoughts on the new device, the key features and much more besides.

Simply create a TomTom account and download the TomTom MyDrive app. You will then be asked to connect your phone to your TomTom device. Once you’re signed into the MyDrive app you can then plan routes, add destinations to My Places, access the traffic checker and edit your account settings all from your smartphone. This is especially useful if you want to remotely set up your destination before driving, you can simply program your journey into your phone (including breaks) and select “send to device”. Your planned journey will then be sent to your TomTom GO, you can also sync your phone with your satnav to let you access your data on both devices. • TomTom Traffic
  • Lifetime Speed Cameras
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for easy updates
  • Hands-free calling and messages
  • Destination Prediction
  • TomTom MyDrive App

The first feature I want to touch on is the built-in Wi-Fi which is one of the main selling points. This handy feature means you no longer have the hassle of cables or computer access to contend with when you want to update maps and software. Simply connect to your chosen Wi-Fi network and select which updates you would like to install from the menu. The TomTom Go 5200 will even notify you when new updates are available so you’ll never be caught out with out of date maps again.

Being able to update the TomTom without any hassle is great, and so is the fact the TomTom Go 5200 offers free lifetime world maps, lifetime speed cameras and lifetime TomTom Traffic. For the life of your TomTom you will receive updated maps from around the world at no extra cost. The lifetime speed cameras will alert you to the presence of a fixed, average or mobile speed cameras before you approach them and remind you of the speed limit, you will receive free updates for the lifetime of the device. If you want to get to your destination without getting stuck in traffic then the TomTom Traffic will be of interest. Thanks to a built-in SIM your device will receive up to date traffic information which lets you plan the best route for your journey and helps you avoid traffic. This service is available worldwide and has no data roaming charges. With real-time updates from millions of drivers, you will always be ahead of the game when it comes to avoiding traffic.

The TomTom GO 5200 isn’t your average satnav, oh no!  The TomTom GO 5200 can learn your driving patterns and predict when you are likely to drive to frequent destinations saved in My Places. The more you use the device the more it will learn your driving habits and the more accurate it will become. You might wonder why this would be useful, but wouldn’t life be easier if you could jump in your car and set off without having the hassle of programming your destination? That’s what the Destination Prediction is designed to do, it can help save time by predicting your destination. Now that’s intelligent!

If you have any of the TomTom GO 5200 predecessors you will notice that the 5200 has had a performance upgrade. Thanks to an upgraded processor start-up, destination searches and route calculations are all faster. Each voice command, swipe and tap will be registered instantly so there’s no hassle and no hanging about for commands to be registered. I found it very quick to load and my commands were registered almost instantaneously, there’s no hanging about with the TomTom GO 5200.

TomTom GO MyDrive App

As well as the amazing features I mentioned above, the TomTom GO 5200 offers hands-free calling and smartphone messages. This option is available for both Android and Apple devices using a Bluetooth connection. Simply follow the instructions to pair the devices, you will then be able to receive and make calls through the TomTom. Since the law changed on the 1st of March 2017 to make penalties whilst using mobile phones when driving more severe (the penalty is now 6 points and a £200 fine). The TomTom Go 5200 eliminates the need to ever reach for your smartphone whilst driving, instead, it can stay in your bag or pocket where it belongs. If you happen to get a message whilst driving the clever device will not only let you know you have received a message but will also read out the message for you. You then have the option of sending a pre-written message as a reply or you can use the voice activation feature to call the person back. You can choose which apps to give the device access to such as Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS etc. You can also use the TomTom GO 5200 to speak to Siri and Google Now by tapping a button on your screen.

Thanks to the Active Magnetic Mount there’s no more spending 5 minutes trying to attach your satnav to the mount. The TomTom GO 5200 can be docked and undocked in a matter of seconds. You can also position the device by adjusting the mount to be used on your windscreen or dashboard whichever position suits you best. The 5-inch touchscreen display means you don’t have to strain your eyes to see any of the information on the screen. The map is clear and easy to read, you also have the option of zooming in and out. The route bar will show up on the right-hand side of the screen when you have a planned journey, it will tell you the time, estimated time of arrival, traffic, highlight service stations, distance and other vital information about your journey. You will also see the relevant speed limit on the bottom of the screen. It displays everything you would expect from a top of the range satnav.

In my opinion – YES! The TomTom GO 5200 offers everything you would need or want in a satnav, and more. From the easy set-up to the lifetime updates, destination prediction, hands-free calling and updates via Wi-Fi, the 5200 is packed full of features which makes it a great choice when it comes to a satnav which will do more than just get you from A to B.
