Who’s on the BestVPN.com Naughty and Nice List?

It has become apparent over the last couple of years that our online data might not always be as safe as it should be. In an ideal world, our data would be held securely and encrypted to keep us safe when we’re online but sometimes our data becomes compromised and falls into the wrong hands.

One of the most talked about online security scandals of 2018 was the discovery that 87million peoples data was breached in a Facebook hack. Names, dates of birth and other sensitive information was obtained by the hackers and that is a huge concern given the fact these details can be used fraudulently. There was also a further incident involving Facebook where it was revealed a third party app had harvested the personal data of millions of people’s Facebook profiles without their consent and used for political gains.

Perhaps one of the most surprising incidents was when it was recently alleged that the UK police were accessing phone records illegally. Considering they should be enforcing and upholding the law, to find out they may have been bending the rules is concerning.

Thankfully, it’s not all bad news when it comes to privacy and data, 2018 has seen some positive changes and laws come into play which will help protect all of us online and even offline in some instances. Here are a couple of examples from the last year;

On May 28th 2018 General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force in the EU and it was welcomed by many. Chances are you will be aware of this new regulation due to the many hundreds of GDPR related emails which I’m sure found their way into your inbox in the run-up to the introduction of the new law. The GDPR law has been created to give citizens more rights when it comes to personal data and also details how companies should protect EU citizens personal data.

Signal is partnering with Microsoft to bring end-to-end encryption to Skype which will give further protection to users who use the service.
